History made at Dripping Wet Pro Junior

Indonesia's Oney Anwar wins the Dripping Wet Pro Junior First ever ASP

Pro Junior win by an Indonesian surfer!

Immediate Release: Sunday August 22 2010: Indonesia's, Gold Coast/Palm Beach

based Hairil Oney Anwar sent out a loud and clear message to the surfing world

that the Indonesian's will be a power in professional surfing by becoming the

first ever Indonesian surfer to win a major Association of Surfing Professionals

Pro Junior surfing event when he won the Dripping Wet Pro Junior at South Curl

Curl Beach on Sydney's northern beaches today.

An ecstatic Onwar commented on his historic performance today saying it

feels fantastic to win his is my first time winning and im stoked  I'm going

to be doing more pro junior events in the next couple of years and it's awesome

to be the first Indonesian surfer to win a Pro Junior event

The day was highlighted by aerial performances  more successful aerial moves

than ever before seen at a pro junior event in Australia according to ASP

Australasia Tour Director Dane Jordan and included an amazing tally of 11 aerial

moves in the four man final.

Onwar has been based on the Gold Coast studying for the past three years and

second in today's final was fellow Gold Coaster Thomas Woods.

Woods set the scene for today's remarkable performances scoring a perfect 10

point ride in an earlier heat when he executed a full rotation 360 degree air

reverse.

Third in today's final completed the Gold Coast trio with Mitch Crews  all

places posting outstanding final tallies on their top two scoring rides of above

16 points with Onwar on 17.75, Woods 16.50 and Crews on 16 while local

Freshwater Beach surfer Tommy Myers came in fourth in the final with a modest

final performance on 11.15.

Newport surfer Chris Salisbury made the semi-finals but saw his year-long

goal of qualifying for the ASP World Junior events disappear when he placed 4th

in that semi final to be eliminated.

The Dripping Wet Pro Junior final day was a spectacle, one of if not the best

day in ASP Australasian Pro Junior surfing history and the performances of these

fast emerging surfers again stamped the future of high performance surfing which

is taking to the air and scoring big for surfing's highest degree of difficulty

aerial moves.

Today wraps up the ASP Australasian Pro Junior season 2010 with the

Dripping Wet Pro Junior and the Blue Kiss Pro Junior the final events of a

hugely successful season.

has posted the biggest win of her competitive career winning the Association of

Surfing Professionals (ASP) Blue Kiss Pro Junior at Curl Curl Beach in Sydney

Defeating Victorian surfer Nikki Van Dijk on a score line of 13.50 to 8.90 it

was a dominant performance from Stevic in the clean 1 to 2 feet waves at Curl

Curl.

"It's really exciting to win my first pro junior and i'd like to thank

everyone who helped organise the event and of course Layne for being an

inspiration to us all - hopefully this is the first of many wins said Stevic

It was also a great day for Victoria's Nikki Van Dijk who also notched up her

best ever result and first final at ASP Pro Junior level - Van Dijk at just 16

year- of age is fulfilling her excellent potential and will also look forward to

next year' Pro Junior season.

Lay Day on Day 2 of the Dripping Wet and Blue Kiss Pro Juniors at Manly

Friday, 20 August 2010

Day two of the Association of Professionals (ASP) Dripping Wet and Blue Kiss Pro Juniors presented by Skullcandy arrived to an extremely small swell at Manly so organizers called a lay day, optimistic the weekend will deliver fun waves to run through the remainder of the event.

Fortunately organizers utilized yesterdays clean performance small waves with a big day of surfing that saw the Blue Kiss Pro Junior Women's advance through three rounds and reduce the field to the final four surfers left in the semi-finals.

Oddly, yesterdays losing performances highlighted the late afternoon heats with Sarah Mason (Casuarina/NSW) eliminated in her round three heat which left her older sister Airini Mason as the undisputed series champion for 2010.

The final heat of the day saw Airini also eliminated from the event placing fourth behind Nikki Van Dyke (Victoria), Ellie-Jean Coffee (NSW) and Philippa Anderson (NSW).

The consequence of these heats resulted in Airini Mason and West Australia's Felicity Palmeteer as the qualifiers for the ASP World Pro Junior Championship Series.

It feels great to win a 2nd ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series title and get the chance to compete for a World Title again. said Mason who has now won this prestigious series twice. I last won the series in 2006 and haven't been competing full-time on juniors for the past few years as my focus has been on the WQS - However the incentive of competing for a World Title, especially with an event in Bali made me decide to do all the junior events this year.

I'm really looking forward to competing in Bali and Narrabeen and hopefully I can win a World Title as it is every surfers dream.

An early start tomorrow at the northern end of Manly will see Australasian's top best 20 year-old and under surfers in action for certain.

Mambo Cadet Cup will be staged at some stage during this events waiting period and will see some of Australia's best under 16 boys fighting it out for $500 and the Salty Rooster Expression Session

Sarcoma Teams Event Fundraiser
Monday, 26 July 2010 16:05

After creating two wonderful and successful events for Team Sarcoma Awareness Week we were all ready for the weekend, sleep in a little, relax a little and enjoy reading the paper on Sunday morning …but wait… this was no ordinary Sunday morning, it was the much anticipated TAG surf event raising funds and awareness for Sarcoma.

The team was up and moving at 6am with volunteers hurriedly unpacking cars, erecting tents, hanging posters and banners for all to see at the beach entrance via the Palm Beach Surf Club.  It was get up and go, go, go, there was kids races and treasure hunts to be sorted, prizes to be selected for the best sand castle makers and of course the exciting raffle items to be displayed.  There were Wahu packs, t-shirts, balls, caps, frisbees and the list goes on.  Unit donated t-shirts, caps, posters and vouchers, as described to me by a teenage member of the surf crew the posters were of an artistic nature and he could appreciate nature when displayed in this manner, I think the nature of his appreciation was called Kim and she was very beautiful.

The event was due to start at 8am with most competitors there by 7.30.  You were greeted at the entrance with a visual display of color, merchandise, banners and posters where everywhere and you had to walk past the ever aromatic smell of sizzling sausages, onions and bacon and eggs for breakfast on the BBQ.  When you needed something sweet there were cupcakes especially made for the event.  Lunch was sausage sandwiches and delicious nachos made by Stag Chili with sour cream, all donated for the event.

The surfers in the competition arrived with boards underarms, wetsuits over shoulders and most with the infectious feeling of anticipation, they are smiling and saying hi to everyone as they enter but really they are saying “Just let me get to the water, I want to check out the surf, I can hear the ocean calling me”.

Ritchie Lovett, Hannahs Chance Ambassador and surfing legend, flew from Sydney to be a compare at the event.  In 2006 Ritchie was diagnosed with bone cancer, he spoke of his journey and gives inspiration to those who listen.  Ritchie has retired from surfing but his story continues to inspire people from all walks of life, he praised the efforts of all the participants, judges and surfers for creating awareness of sarcoma.

The Palm Beach Surf Club offered the use of its facilities for the day and accommodated all our needs.  Terry “Tappa” Teece was the compare for the events, he introduced the judges and the teams and kept us all on focus with scores and who was running for their teams.  There were 90 competitors in all and five teams, Alley Boardriders, Burleigh Boardriders,  Kirra Boardriders, MNM Boardriders and Palm Beach Boardriders. Once the introductions were made they were off and surfing.

Clean, two-foot waves washed up to the sand, set after set.  The waves were of grommet size so it meant everyone in the team could have a go, perfect.  Some of the bigger surfers had to show off their skill on the smaller waves to earn their points but in true surfer style all surfed with their passion for the sport spurring them on.

The Wolfe Family donated the ornate carved wooden trophy for the winning team.  The Alley Boardriders won this event for the second year in a row, there was some friendly jostling amongst the surfers after the awards were handed out with comments of “Yeah yeah we will win next year, it was just a fluke and the gimp suit has to make an appearance every week”.  The scores were very close with The Alley 1st, Burleigh 2nd, MNM 3rd, Palm Beach 4th and Kirra 5th.

The weather was changeable throughout the day, when the sun shone it was hot, then a cool wind would blow to cool you down, perfect for spectating at the beach.

Towards the end of the day all participants were asked to go down to the beach and stand in a certain area, after everyone was in place a helicopter flew over to take an aerial photo of the beach.  A human Sarcoma sign was made on the beach with all hands raised in the air with sarcoma bands on show, absolutely awesome.

The surfers surfed, the kids played, the spectators were entertained, glancing around the surf club you could feel real community spirit with both the sarcoma and the surf teams vowing that next year will be bigger and better.

What a great day for Team Sarcoma.
